Houghton Is Dead - Edwin J. Houghton, 66, traffic manager of the Ionia Manufacturing Company and for many years an official of that firm and its predecessor, the Ypsilanti Reed Furniture Company, died at 11:30 p.m., Monday at Blodgett Memorial hospital in Grand Rapids after a two weeks illness. A resident of Ionia for 33 years, he was an active conservationist and was instrumental in the establishment of the Ionia County Fishing and Hunting club and other programs relating to nature. He was an avid outdoorsman and traveled extensively in this country, Canada and Mexico. He photographed many of his expeditions and was for many years in demand as a speaker using his travels for topics. He was born May 8, 1898 at Ithaca, N.Y., the son of Professor Charles Edwin and Anna Boschen Houghton. Professor Houghton was a member of the Columbia university staff for many years. Mr. Houghton was graduated from New York university and following his graduation entered the United States Navy serving as a lieutenant in 1917 remaining there until 1920 serving throughout World War I. His service included action in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Caribbean. He was married to Katherine Timm in New York City, December 5, 1922. The couple moved to Chicago where Mr. Houghton became identified with the Chicago office of the Ypsilanti Reed Furniture Company in Ionia in 1925 and became manager of that sales office in 1927. In 1929 they moved to Ionia where he became sales manager and vice president of the firm. He remained with the personnel when the Ypsilanti Reed Furniture Company became the Ionia Manufacturing Company, a division of Mitchell-Bentley Corporation. He served in several capacities, the latest of which was traffic manager. He served one term as a member of the Ionia city board of education for four years and was the board's secretary. In state conservation circles he was an important member of the Michigan United Conservation clubs legislative committee early in that association's formation years. Interested in penalogy he served on public boards set up to study the state's penal problems. Mr. Houghton was a special deputy sheriff for many years serving under several sheriffs. A member of Ionia SS. Peter and Paul Catholic church, he belonged to the Legion of Mary. He was also a member of the Ionia American Legion and the Ionia County Hunting and Fishing club of which he was a past president. Each summer he worked with the Mexican Apostolate. Surviving are his wife, Katherine; three daughters, Mrs. H. Frank Beeman of East Lansing, Mrs. John W. Blair of Westerville, Ohio, and Mrs. Mervin Buckingham of Huntington, W. Va; two sons, Peter Houghton of Marshall and Frederick Lord Houghton, a student at Fife, Scotland, United Kingdom; six grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Sullivan of Scarsdale, N.Y. Requiem High Mass will be sung at 9 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic church Thursday. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet cemetery east of Ionia. Recitation of the rosary will be Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Myers funeral home. A memorial is being established for the Legion of Mary of the SS. Peter and Paul church." IONIA SENTINEL-STANDARD, MI; May 18, 1962: "DEATHS - EDWIN J. HOUGHTON - Solemn Requiem High Mass was sung at 9 o'clock Thursday morning at SS. Peter and Paul church for Edwin J. Houghton, 66, 442 Rich street, who died Monday night after an illness of two weeks. The Rev. Fr. Thomas Schiller was mass celebrant, assisted by Fr. Vincent J. Kamarauskas of Ionia and Fr. E. R. Fox of Hubbardston. Interment was at Mt. Olivet cemetery. Bearers were Donald Mitchell, Arthur Brown, Leon Lockwood, Wilson Dalzell, Harold Schmidt and Robert Beard. Among out of town persons attending were Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Lowe of Detroit, Jack Rvdarsyk of Grand Rapids, Dr. and Mrs. G. E. Buckingham of Meadville, Pa., and Mrs Evelyn Sullivan of Scarsdale, N.Y."
