He was a graduate of Colby University, Waterville, Maine. He commenced his college course at Yale; but owing to limited means completed it at Colby University from which he graduated with first honors in 1825. About the time of his graduation he preached awhile in the Baptist denomination in Boston, Mass. The most of his life, however, was given to teaching. He taught in Perry, N. Y., form 1826 to 28, then coming west taught in Ypsilanti, Mich., from 1828 to ’30; in Farmington, Mich., from 1830 to ‘52; in Rose, Mich., from 1852 to 64. Mentally, Mr. Hovey retained the freshness and vigor of youth very late in life. He was active in his chosen profession, - teaching individuals at his home or in conducting public schools till within a few years of his death. He continued correspondence with the members of his class till one by one all of them preceded him into the unseen. He retained the amiable qualities of early years wonderfully in old age. An excellent and well stored memory made his presence at the hearth where he waited for his “change” both pleasant and instructive to the many who loved to gather around. He died in peace having many tender memories to linger in the hearts that sorrow at his departure.
