Howard, 86, of Nashville died Jan. 17, 1997. She was born in Portland April 13, 1910, the daughter of Clarence A. and Ethel (Rice) Guilford. She was a 1928 graduate of Portland High School and received a teacher’s certificate from Charlevoix Normal School. She taught in Byon Falls and was later employed at the former American Legion Hospital and the former Woolworth’s store in Battle Creek. She retired from Leila Hospital in Battle Creek after 17 years of service in the . . . [missing lines in this copy] . . . Clarice M. Traylor of Yokohama, Japan; one son, Allen M. Howard of Battle Creek; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Rev. Clarence A. Guilford of Lansing; and special friend Christine Danks. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard Howard, in 1967; and one sister, Erma A. Young, in 1963. Services were held Jan. 20 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home and Battle Creek with the Rev. Guilford officiating. Interment took place at Danby Cemetery in Portland.
