Howard was born Jan. 1, 1840, and was of a family of 14 children of which eight survive him. He was a member of Dan S. Root Post No. 126 G.A.R. He went into the service of his country and arrived at the scene of action just after the battle of Lookout Mountain. He was with Sherman’s army on its march to the sea and fired the second gun at the engagement at Bentonville. He was in the front ranks before Peterburg and saw Gen. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox. He has resided on the farm where he died for the past 17 years. He leaves a wife but no children. The great General on high sounded the bugle call “lights out,” and in an instant he was gone to join his comrades in that great eternity we know not of.
