Howard, 67, of 1420 Tuttle Road, Ionia, died unexpectedly at her residence Friday morning. Born Oct. 5, 1917, in Berlin Township, she was the daughter of Frederic B. and Belle Smith Howard, and a descendant of Berlin Township pioneers. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ionia. She graduated from Ionia High School with the Class of 1935 and from Grinnell College, Iowa. She taught the County Farm Rural School in Berlin Township and was the last teacher of Ware School in Boston Township before it closed. She received her master’s degree from The University of Michigan in 1947 and was the Curator for Education at the Kalamazoo Museum from 1949-1977, when she retired. After retirement she made her permanent home in the family residence on Tuttle Road. A long-time weaver, she maintained a studio at her residence and was active in weaving groups and as an instructor. She is survived by a cousin, Bertha Howard, with whom she made her home; a nephew, Keith Howard, and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Dygert, of Ionia, and other cousins. A brother Maurice died in France in 1944 while serving in the armed forces, and a brother Russell preceded her in death in 1972. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. from the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Balcom Cemetery. The family will be at Roetman Funeral Home Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church and Grinnell College, in care of the funeral home.
