A native of Toledo, Ohio, he spent his early life in Lake Odessa and graduated with the class of 1912 of the local-high school. He graduated from the University of Michigan with Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees and taught in the public schools of Michigan for 36 years. with 28 years in the Dearborn school retiring three years ago. Ervie was the coach in the local school for two years and the local school athletics held the record in 1919-20 with nine wins and no losses in football compiling 425 to their opponate none, nine wins and two losses in basketball and seventeen wins and one loss in baseball. An Ervie Howard Athlete Club was formed 25 years ago and a banquet was held here the latter part of May each year with Ervie present except for two years. A war veteran, he served overseas during World War I, member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 1484 and was a past commander of the V.F.W. Ervie was a member of the Mt. Olivet Methodist Church, National Education and Michigan Education Associations, Phi Delta Kappa Honorary Fraternity, Dearborn Rotary Club, Olive Branch Lodge No. 542, F& AM (life member) and Dearborn Association of School Administrators. Surviving are his wife the former Bernice Reed of Dearborn; one son Ervin Earl Howard; one daughter, Mrs. Norene Tanner and one grandson Robert E. Howard all of Detroit. Funeral services were held Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. at the McFarland, Funeral Home at 5401 Schafer Rd., Dearborn and Thursday at 1:30 p.m. (today) at the Pickens Funeral Chapel . Burial in Lakeside Cemetery. Rev. Edgar M. Wahlberg officiated.
