Veteran of Civil War After a year of failing health and about six weeks confinement to his home, Attorney W.H. Howard passed away at his home Friday morning, June 27. For 26 years "Lawyer Howard", as he was familiarly known was one of the fixtures of the Village of Lake Odessa. He was well read and kept his faculties as long a he was able to attend to business. He was sought after many times when a decisive answer was needed at once as he was nearly always accurate in his decisions. His familiar figure and wise council will be missed by the people of the village and vicinity. He was enthusiastic in h is praise of the church of his choice which was the Liberal United Brethren of which he was a member. Mr. Howard was a resident of the county for forty-four years, having practiced eighteen years in the village of Portland. He has served as village attorney, as Justice of Peace, and as Circuit Court Commissioner. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the U.B. church, the sermon was by Rev. Zuse, the pastor, and burial was at Lakeside cemetery. OBITUARY William Henry Howard was born in Ashtabula county, Ohio May 15, in which county he spent his boyhood and early manhood. When twenty-one years of age he heard his country's call and enlisted in Company E, 121st Regiment, Ohio Infantry. After several campaigns he participated in the battle of Chicamauga, where he was severely wounded. Later he was discharged from the hospital and transferred to Company H 2nd Regiment Veteran Reserve Corps, in which organization he served until the close of the war. In July 1865 he was discharged from the army and returned to his home in Pagetown, Ohio. The following year he was united in marriage to Adaline Rine. Not long after they moved to Johnstown, MO where he practiced law for several years with his brother. In 1875 he acme with his family to Portland, Michigan and was there engaged in his profession for eighteen years, moving to Lake Odessa n 1893, where he has lived for twenty-six years. He leaves a bereaved wife, three sons, viz., Willard of Lincoln, Mich., and Milton and Erve of this village, one sister, Mrs.Permelia Sturdevant of Reed City, six grandchildren and many other relatives and friends to mourn their loss.
