Lake Odessa Wave - August 14, 1946
          MILT HOWARD DIED IN LAKE THURSDAY

   Milton (Milt) L. Howard, 75, drowned in about 20 feet of water near Eagle Point,
Jordan Lake, at about 3 
o'clock Thursday afternoon of last week shortly after he and Floyd Cramer, 65, of
Sunfield left the Point to 
fish.  According to witnesses, the boat sprung a leak and sank rapidly. 

   Two girls in a boat who were picking waterlittlies nearby were able to help
Cramer to safety, and tried to 
help Howard but were unable to reach him.  The girls were Donna Belle Shire, 13, and
Kay Cranmer, 11, both of 
Lansing.

   The Lake Odessa Fire department was called at about 3:30 and responded with its
inhalator and 
resuscitator and, though the apparatus was not used, it was kept at hand during the
upward of two hours of 
dragging required to locate the body.

   Assisting in the dragging operations were Leon Stearns, Sherwood Durkee, Cliff
Shellmand and Ernest 
Bertotti of the local department, and Sheriff Doster and Deputy Matson of Barry
county.  Coroner Guy Ritter, 
also of Hastings, said death was due to accidental drowning.

   Mr. Howard was a retired plumber and mason, who had spent the most of his life in
Lake Odessa.  Surviving are his wife, Mae; a stepson Ervin Howard and instructor in the 
Dearborn schools; a brother Willard, 80, at Owosso and two grandchildren, Irvin, Jr., and 
Norene Howard at Dearborn.

   Funeral services were held at the Pickens funeral chapel Saturday afternoon, the
Rev. Victor W. Thrall, officiating.  Burial was in Lakeside cemetery.
