Ionia Sentinel-Standard
Gardner W. Howard, 96, of 716 Branch street, died Saturday at Ionia County 
Memorial Hospital.  He was born in Orleans, March 30, 1881, the son of Joseph 
and Annie Smith Howard and was a descendent of the Joseph Howard family which 
came to the Ionia area in 1842.  He farmed in the Orleans area most of his life 
and was a member of First United Methodist Church.  He was a former member of 
the Ronald Grange.  Mr. Howard married the former Lydia Hoppough in January, 
1906 in Orleans.  She died in 1964.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Murray (Isabel) Young of Gaylord and Mrs. 
George (Ethel) Trautman of Ionia; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, 
nieces and nephews.  Services are Thursday at 1 pm from the Leddick funeral home 
with Rev Charles Fullmer of Grandville United Methodist church officiating.  
Burial is in Orleans cemetery.  The family will receive friends and relatives at 
the funeral home Tuesday and Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm.  A memorial fund is 
established for First United Methodist church.
