The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Methodist church, the pastor Rev. H.E. Wylie officiating. The singing was by Messrs. Herrick and Henderson, Mrs. Henderson and Miss Conroy, two of the pieces being those request by deceased, “Asleep in Jesus” and “Rock of Ages.” The remarks of Mr. Wylie were full of sympathy and consolation. The pall-bearers were Messrs. N.D. Koutz, Joel Cross, Lyman Hizer and C.R. Herrick. Interment in Lyons cemetery. The following biographical sketch was prepared by Rev. J.R. Bowen and read at the funeral: “Francis Parks was born May 22, 1839, in Madison county, N.Y., which place was her home the first 12 years of her life. Her father having a building contract in Illinois, the family removed to that state, remaining a year or more, thence going to Ingham Co., Michigan. Here she was united in marriage to Thomas Hoffman and two sons came in the home, William and Nelson, both of whom she survived. Her husband enlisted in the 15th Michigan infantry and was among the number killed at the battle of Pittsburg Landing March 2nd 1861. About 4 years previous to his enlistment Mr. Hoffman had moved his family to Lyons and thus the deceased has been a resident here 46 years. Remaining a widow about 5 years, she again married, April, 1866, this time to Ransom Howe, who after traveling life’s journey together with her for 37 years, today mourns the loss of a faithful companion. Over 20 years ago Mrs. Howe was converted, her husband soon after accepted Christ and 18 years ago both united in full connection with the Lyons M.E. church. Sister Howe has seen much of affliction in loss of her former husband and later of her two sons. She has also been a great physical sufferer, especially during her latter years. It is greatly to her credit that her two grandsons have ever been to her subjects of tender care and solicitude. In grandmother those motherless boys have ever found a most affectionate and sincere friend. To the mourning husband and friends we extend the heartfelt sympathy of this community in this, their great affliction.
