Howe went into Butler’s barber shop to be shaved, and while waiting his chance suddenly fell from the chair upon his face. Drs. Hugg and Alton were called and said the Major had been stricken with paralysis. He was conveyed to a room at the Welch house, where he now lies. Being an old gentleman 76 years of age, and his entire right side being paralyzed, there is no hope that he can possibly recover. (See notice of his death elsewhere in this paper). Portland, Michigan, April 14. Major P. R. Howe died at 9 o’clock this morning of paralysis. Philander R. Howe was born in Norwich, Chenango county, N.Y., January 20, 1812. He came with his father to Michigan in 1825, settling in Washtenaw. His father who was a prominent man, died in 1848. Philander received such advantages as were offered by the district schools of that day; he studied surveying and was also engaged as a teacher. In 1833 the Black Hawk war broke out and Maj. Howe enlisted. He received a minor position in the regiment but as he evidenced much military acumen, he received a commission as major from Gov. Mason. In 1835 he went to Wisconsin and where he was engaged in surveying for a short time. He then returned to Washtenaw County and engaged in the location and purchase of lands; he located in different portions of the state over 12,000 acres. In 1835 he purchased his farm in Portland but did not make a permanent settlement, however until 1847. In the spring of that year he was married to Miss Mary Lowry, who died in 1871. He was for five terms supervisor, but never sought political preferment. He had accumulated well-won competency and will be greatly missed by the people of Portland and vicinity, and also by many friends in other portions of the county.
