Mrs. Howe was one of the cheerful dispositioned souls and no matter how hard her lot appeared to be at time, was always anxious and ready to look on the bright side of things. She was a southern born woman and on many occasions would recall incidents which occurred before the Civil war, her father having been one of the plantation owners and having among his property numerous slaves. Mrs. Howe told of slave whipping, sales of slaves both private and at auction, and said that those were ordinary things in life which at the time seemed right but which in later years she looked on with abhorrence. She told the writer one time of how she hated the north and its soldiers because of the fact that they sought to deprive the south of what they termed their rights, but how this hatred left her when her future husband, Martin L. Howe, then a young northern army engineer came to the section to the section of the country where she was living. Many years ago Mr. and Mrs. Howe came back to the north and settled on his farm several miles southeast of this city, where they resided until some time after Mr. Howe's death when Mrs. Howe came to this city to live with her granddaughter, Mrs. Ernest Anderson. Following Mrs. Howe's death her body was taken to her grand daughter's home where it will remain until Thursday afternoon at two o'clock, when the funeral will be held at the Baptist church of which she was a member, Rev. W. A. Biss officiated and burial will be by the side of her husband, in River Ridge cemetery. Mrs. Howe was for many years our valued correspondent in the Brink neighborhood and her items were always eagerly looked for by our city and country readers. While her life since her accident had been filled with misery and although she longed for the day when her spirit would be freed from its earthly prison and death being in a way a blessing, still her many friends will always think of this dear old lady as one whose friendship was genuine and timely though it was her death will be regretted by many.
