He had been in declining health several years, but it was only a week before his death that he gave up and took to his bed. The funeral services were held in the Baptist church at Portland, Thursday, at 1 o'clock, Revs. Millard and Bower officiating. O.D.Howell was born in Orange,N.Y. He moved to Hillsdale in 1836, and was married shortly after.Ten years later he came to Portland and cleared the farm which he sold a few yers ago to John Moriarty. The Howell school house is located on a corner of this farm, and derived its name from deceased. Eleven years ago his wife died and he went to Matherton to reside. Of thirteen children, only six survive him.Four sons went to war.One was killed in Dixie land, and two died as a result of hardships endured, though they witnessed the close of the struggle. The children living are Erastus Howell, Carson City; W.B. Howell, Detroit; Henrietta McBride, Mary Kiltz, Jane Lattimer, Matherton; Mrs.Frank Andrews, Portland. Mr. Howell united with the Baptist Church shortly after coming to Portland; he lived and died in his faith. For many years he had been a member of Portland Lodge F.& A.M. and this fraternity attended the funeral in a body. On the occasion of is 81st birthday children and grand-children, numbering in all twenty-nine persons, came together to assist the pioneer in celebrating. Many of these attended the funeral Thursday.
