Hubbard the oldest son of Henry and Lodica Hubbard was born Sept. 12, 1827 at Ludlow, Mass, and moved with his parents at the age of six years to Hamden, Geauga Co., Ohio. He procured a good education in the Painesville school he then took a course in medicine and practiced with Dr. Stebbins the leading physician of Painsville. He later gave up the practice of medicine to follow the vocation of teaching school until March 2, 1857 when he was united in marriage to Louisa Gates of Chorden, Ohio. To this union were born five children, Violia Cook of Sebewa, Harry I. of South Berlin, John S. of Onaway, Presquisle Co., Sidney U. of Chase, Lake Co. who passed away about a year ago, Lola Mickle of Davenport, Iowa. In 1859 he came to Michigan buying one half section of land in South Berlin living there till the out break of the Civil war when he enlisted in Co. M. 7 Michigan Cavalry serving till the close of the war, he again took up the vocation of farming until his declining years spending the last few years at the Soldiers home in Grand Rapids where on December 29, 1910 he passed away. The funeral services were held Dec. 31 at the M. E. church in Lake Odessa conducted by Rev. Laity, singing by the M. E. choir. Interment made in Lakeside cemetery. He leaves to mourn his loss four children, fourteen grandchildren, eleven great grand children, one sister Mrs. Chas. Durkee of Berlin, one brother, George Hubbard of Chorden, Ohio, the pall bearers were his four nephews, Lafayette, Fremont, Don and Ellis Durkee.
