Hubbell, of Lyons, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 5, at the age of 88. The maiden name of the deceased was Eliza Kinney, and she was born in the state of New York, June 21, 1806; was married, at Rochester, N.Y., in 1830, and removed to Detroit, Mich., in 1832, where Mr. Hubbell followed his trade as hatter until 1836, when he removed to Lyons, Mich. Deceased was thus a resident of the state over sixty years and of Ionia county 57 years. They first settled on the farm now occupied by Robert Bradley, one mile west of the village of Lyons. Mr. Hubbell was the first mail carrier to Grand Rapids, and held the position for ten years. At first the mail was carried on horseback, until roads and bridges were constructed making it possible to use wagons. Many hardships were experienced in those days, fording swollen streams and following the trail through the dense forests. About 1846, Mr. Hubbell purchased the Lyon hotel, and made extensive additions to same; and many old settlers will recollect that noted hostelry, presided over by “Uncle Amos” and his kind and active wife. In 1857, the hotel was sold to Darwin Lyon, and “Uncle Amos” removed to his residence in this village, now occupied by Mrs. Chubb, where he died early in the seventies. Mrs. Hubbell for several years past has resided with her daughter, Mrs. Peter Coon, who was their only child. Thus closes the life history of another of the earliest settlers of the Grand River valley. Mrs. Hubbell was a woman of strong convictions and great Bible student. Although she was not connected with any church, she was a true and practical Christian, and will long be remembered for her many kind acts and estimable qualities of character.
