L. Hubbell, well known and highly respected resident of this city, at her home, 122 E. Congress street. While Mrs. Hubbell had been troubled for a time with high blood pressure, she had complained but little and on Wednesday night had attended a local entertainment, remaining up until a late hour and retiring with no evidence of serious ill health and with all thoughts of death perhaps the farthest away in her mind or in the minds of the several teachers who roomed with her and with whom she had spent the evening. It had been customary for Mrs. Hubbell to arise each morning and call the teachers. Thursday morning the teachers noticed that they were not called and finally they decided to investigate, one of them, Miss Sonnenberg, going to see what was the cause. Looking into Mrs. Hubbell’s room at about 7:45 o’clock, found her dead upon the floor at the foot of her bed. She was dressed in her night clothes and had apparently slept for some time and had got up for some reason or other and dropped dead. An electric light was burning in the room and this would indicate that the hour of her death must have been long before dawn. It was about 7:45 o’clock when the teachers made the discovery and Dr. Hollard was called. He arrived and pronounced her dead and stated that death had been caused from acute palpitation of the heart. He also thought that Mrs. Hubbell had been dead for four or more hours. The teachers who roomed in the home heard Mrs. Hubbell stirring around at about one o’clock and it may be that either at that time or shortly afterward, death struck her. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at three o’clock, Rev. W. J. Rooke, pastor of the Congregational church officiating and he gave a short discourse on the life of the deceased and offered prayer. Mrs. Earl Wilson read the song, “Abide With Me.” The following obituary was also read. Myrtle Amy Reed was born at Mason, Lenawee county, Michigan, October 4, 1865. Died June 14, 1923, aged 57 years. Her mother died when she was in her early childhood. Her early life was spent in the usual way of children. About 32 years ago she came to Belding, which, as the years passed, became very dear to her and no other place ever appealed to her as a home. She was married to Isreal L. Hubbell, June 9, 1897 and he preceded her in death three years ago this month. She leaves to mourn their loss: her stepmother, four sisters, two brothers and other near relative and many very dear friends and close associates. Thus would we record the chronological history of one whom we knew and loved so well. But can we pass with these few words a life so full of preserving industry and service in her home, social and fraternal life, and in short wherever called upon to do her part? On the other hand can we find words that will properly and adequately express our thoughts and feelings at this time? Surely her life cannot be measured in months and years but in the fullness thereof. All can testify to her untiring zeal in all things she undertook. To be always working seemed to be her great objective. Particularly has this been so since the death of her chosen life partner which was a blow she scarcely could stand. It seemed to be then, that if it were possible she must double her physical efforts to help soften this blow which had come to her. Interment was made in the Hubbell lot at River Ridge cemetery, by the side of her husband, the late I. L. Hubbell, who, as stated before, passed away three years ago this month.
