Huffman, 61, of Belding, passed away peacefully at his home Thursday, Aug 8, 2002, surrounded by his family. He was born April 17, 1941 in Charlevoix, the son of A. Ross and Martha A. Cornell Huffman. Nick graduated from Belding High School with the class of 1959. After graduation, he attended Central Michigan University for two years and then went to the Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science in Milwaukee. He graduated in 1962 and earned his license in 1963. He served his country in the Michigan National Guard. Nick acquired the Huffman Funeral Home in Belding from his parents in 1977. He has owned and operated the Greenville Office Store since 1996. Nick was an active member of the Belding community, where he received many awards. He served as a president of the Belding Jaycees, he was a JC International Senator, treasurer of the Belding Chamber of Commerce and member of the Labor Day Homecoming Committee. He served as co-chairman of the Labor Day Talent Show. Nick was one of the first recipients of the Top Hat Award honoring community service given by the Belding Business and Professional Women. He was a former member of the Belding Lodge #355 Free & Active Masons and was pleased to receive his 8-gallon donor pin from the Red Cross. He served as president of the Washington Club. Nick served his church as chairman of the Administrative Council at the Belding United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School. An avid trumpet player, he enjoyed being president of the Belding Band Boosters and occasionally joined the students playing in the Pep Band at local basketball games. He was chairman of the Belding High School Alumni Association and was instrumental in organizing the 100th Graduation Class Celebration in 1983. Nick enjoyed running and he was a charter member of the Silk City 8,000 Mile Joggers Club. He played tennis every week and enjoyed skiing in the winter. He was a student of history, especially the Civil War. He was intrigued by Thomas Jefferson and owned many books about him. He enjoyed collecting antiques and his collection of Belding postcards. Surviving are his parents, A. Ross and Martha Huffman, Bradenton, Fla., his children and their mother, Rita Huffman; his son, Barry Huffman, Holland; his daughter and husband, Jenna M.G. and David J. Phillips, Holland; and their children Jerry Nicholas and Orian Mae; two brothers, Dr. Craig A. and Linda Huffman, Lake St. Louis, Mo., Carter R. and Nancy Huffman, Grand Rapids; several nieces and nephews and his trusting canine companion, Warren. A celebration of his life will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church at the corner of Pleasant and Washington Street in Belding with Rev. Ellen Brubaker officiating. Marshall Funeral Home is entrusted with serving the family. Memorial contributions are encouraged for the Belding Museum, Alvah N. Belding Library Building Fund, United Memorial Health System Foundation and Hospice of Michigan.
