She was born in Central Lake on July 3, 1912, the daughter of Walter and Kathryn (Oosterbaan) Cornett. Following graduation from Central Lake High School, she attended County Normal Teachers College. Martha met and married A. Ross Huffman and the couple moved to Belding in 1945 to own and operate what had formerly been Fales Funeral Home as Huffman Funeral Home for many years. She also worked at the local jewelry store which she and her husband also co-owned and operated. She was a devoted wife and mother, taking care of her home and children while helping with the family businesses. After selling the funeral business to their son, Martha moved to Florida where she lived for several years prior to returning to the area to live near family in Grand Rapids. She settled into Clark Retirement Community where she was always busy with activities and forged many relationships with her new neighbors. Martha was an active lifelong member of Belding United Methodist Church and belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star Doric Chapter 75 and the Washington Club. The memory of her will be cherished by her family including children, Dr. Craig (Linda) Huffman of St. Louis, Mo., Carter (Nancy) Huffman of Grand Rapids; grandchildren Kathy (Rodney) Lucas of Mechanicsville, Md., Melinda (Mike) Schwartz of Memphis, Tenn., Barry Huffman of Holland, Mich., Sarah (David) Weiker of Palos Hills, Ill., Jordan (Erin) Huffman of Stevens Point, Wis., Jenna Huffman-Phillips of Holland, Mich., Andrew (Nichole) Huffman of Grand Rapids; nine great-grandchildren with an additional one on the way; and former daughters-in-law, Marjorie A. Huffman of Milwaukee, Wis., Rita M. Huffman of Belding. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, A. Ross Huffman; son, Nicholas Huffman; and siblings. A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at Clark Retirement Community, 1551 Franklin St. SE, Grand Rapids, with Pastor Kathy Rafferty officiating. Private interment will take place at a later date when she will be laid to rest next to her spouse at River Ridge Cemetery, Belding. Martha’s family will greet visitors beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Clark Retirement Community prior to the service.
