Ross was born in Gladwin on Oct 3, 1912, to Allen Phillip and Bertha Flora Codling Huffman. Ross was raised and attended local area schools in the Gladwin and Central Lake areas. He graduated from Gladwin High School with the class of 1930 and Worsham College of Embalming Class of 1933 in Chicago. After graduating, he worked for Estes-Leadley Funeral Home in Lansing. On July 11, 1938, in Boyne City, Ross married Martha A. Cornett, the love of his life for 67 years. Ross worked for Houck Plumbing, worked as a professional painter, then in 1945 Ross continued caring for his community by purchasing Fales Funeral Home, which became Huffman Funeral Home in Belding. In the early 1950s he opened Huffman’s Jewelry Store in downtown Belding, providing excellent customer care and building good public relations. The determination he exhibited in helping his community was shown through the organizations and boards Ross was involved with. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Michigan Funeral Directors Association, 12-year member of Ionia County Welfare Department Board of Directors, seven-year member of First Security Bank (Independent Bank) Board of Directors, Belding City Council, Belding Chamber of Commerce director, and was a member of Belding United Methodist Church, Washington Club, Belding Lodge 355 F&AM, past member 32nd degree Valley of G.R. Scottish Rite, and the Rotary Club, life member of Belding Sportsman’s club, life member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a member of the Oddfellows when they were still active. Ross was preceded by his parents; son, Nicholas W. Huffman, in 2002; brother, Clayton A. Huffman; and sister, Alma Knight. Ross is survived by his wife, Martha; two sons and three daughters-in-law, Dr. Craig A. and Linda Huffman of Lake St. Louis, Mo., Carter R. and Nancy Huffman of Grand Rapids, Rita Huffman of Belding; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Huffman-Brigham Funeral Chapel, Belding, with Pastors Ken Harger and Connie Shatz officiating. Visitation is one hour before the service at the funeral home.
