Danby township suffered another keen loss last week and a mantle of gloom was 
thrown over the entire community when word was passed around that George Hughes 
had died suddenly during the night while asleep at his farm home near the Barr 
schoolhouse.

On retiring the night before Mr. Hughes appeared to be in his usual health, 
having been about the farm helping in the work the day before.  Friday morning 
when he did not appear at the usual time, his daughter, Mrs. Anthony Simmons, 
who with her husband, had been making her home with her father, went to his 
room to awaken him and found him lying dead in the bed.  Dr. T.K. Brown was 
summoned and stated death was due to apoplexy.

Mr. Hughes was born near Plymouth, Michigan, 75 years ago, coming to Orange 
township with his parents when an infant.  When six years of age the family 
moved to Danby and settled on the farm where his death occurred.

When in his early twenties Mr. Hughes was united in marriage to Lucinda Way, 
who passed away three years ago, since which time his daughter and husband, Mr. 
and Mrs. Simmons, had been residing with him.  he was a member of the local 
lodge of Odd Fellows and during his lifetime had held several township offices.

Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon and the appreciation of 
his fine character and the esteem in which he was held were manifested in the 
large number of friends who gathered with members of the family to pay a 
parting tribute to one whom they all loved. 

Three children survive, Mrs. Simmons, Mrs. James W. Southwell, and Allen 
Hughes, all residing in this vicinity.
