Aug. 30, 1965 PORTLAND- One of Portland's favorite residents and public servant for over 25 years, Allen W. Hughes, 73, 422 Academy street, Portland, died Saturday night at a Lansing hospital. He had been a State Farm Insurance Agent 36 years and a justice of the peace until the end of his term, July 1, 1965, for over 25 years. He was born on a farm to Mr. and Mrs. George Hughes, April 28, 1892, and attended Barr school, Portland high school and Detroit college of medicine one year. In 1912 he returned to Portland and farmed with his father, later working as accountant at Portland Cooperative elevator one year and as manager eight years. He was an avid collector of antique glass, coins and stamps and at one time had 110 antique trivets in his collection. His first wife, the former Hannah Ayars, died in 1959. r. Hughes later married Dana Miner who died a few weeks after their marriage. A son, Philip survives besides three grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Mable Southwell, all of Portland. Mr. Hughes was a past master of Portland lodge F&AM and member of Portland Lodge 23 R&SM, Portland lodge 39 R&AM and was secretary of Blue Lodge 23 for 20 years. He was also a member of Portland Congregational church. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Neller funeral home. The Rev. Robert Treat will officiate and burial will be at Portland cemetery.
