Hughes, 86, of Kentwood, formerly of Portland, passed away on Oct. 23, 2009. He was born on March 21, 1923 in Keego Harbor the son of Allen and Hannah Hughes. Phil served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a lifetime member and past Post Commander of the V.F.W. Post 4090 in Portland. He enjoyed playing baseball and football in his early years as well as bowling and deer hunting. Phil loved singing, dancing and playing the drums. He was preceded in death by his wife, Adeline and a son, Allen Hughes. Surviving are his children Diane Hughes of Kentwood, Sharon (George) Frye of El Paso, Texas, and Ken (Cindy) Hughes of Edmore; grandchildren Brandy (Chad) Bulthuis, Emily (Brian) Peterson, Eric (Betty) Frye, Jenny (Michael) Kruger, Allen Hughes and Holly (John) Shortz; great-grandchildren, Christian, Joseph, Jacob, Matthew, Caitlyn, Zachary, Wyatt, Ethan, Juliette, Evan, Kayden, Madison, Kayley, Zach and Caleb. The funeral service was held on October 26 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland with Rev. Larry King, Presiding. Right of Committal followed at Portland Cemetery. Military honors were provided by the V.F.W. Post 4090.
