Charles Hughes died very suddenly at his home on the west side last Sunday forenoon, aged 58 years last June. Heart trouble, as decided upon by Drs. Dellenbaugh and Buskirk, was the cause of death. Mr. Hughes was pensioner of Civil war and drew $8 per month on account of a weak heart. He was a blacksmith by trade and operated a shop on Maple street, being a good workman. He was a member of John Megarah post and lodges of Oddfellows and Rebekahs. Mr. Hughes came here from Owosso 11 years ago, and during the time had worked at different vocations. He was a marshal under Perry N. Moore. He was married a second time to Mrs. Mary Esch two years ago. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Clyde Moore and Chas. Hughes of Portland, ?? of Detroit, and Dave and ??, whose whereabouts are unknown. Deceased was a hard drinker periodically and he had been indulging quite freely some days prior to his death, and the liquor no doubt affected his heart. In speaking of her father to The Observer Mrs. Moore said: “No one had a better father when he was not in liquor, and whiskey was the direct cause of his death.” Funeral services will be conducted at the house Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock and will be in charge of the Oddfellows.
