Ronald D. Hughes, 64, Belding, passed away Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at United
Memorial Hospital, Greenville.  He was born Jan. 6, 1933, in Grand Rapids to
Glenn and Florence Peck Hughes.  He earned his bachelor’s degree from Hope
College and his master’s degree from Michigan State University.  He retired in
1995 from Belding Area Schools after 38 years as teacher, coach and
administrator.  He served the city of Belding for more than 18 years as mayor,
vice-mayor and councilman.  He also served on the planning commission and other
boards throughout his career.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church,
Washington Club and a former member of the Belding Lions Club.

He was married May 9, 1959, to Jeanne Martin.  She survives along with his
children, Jeannine and Frank Krzykwa of Raleigh, N.C., Mary and Todd Sloan of
Middleville, Jennifer Hughes of Belding, Michael and Sonja Hughes of Wyoming;
six grandsons; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Glenda and Leonard McHenry of
White Cloud, Pat and Bernie Bassarab of Anderson, S.C.; two brothers and
sisters-in-law, Don and Jean Hughes of Caledonia, Gerald and Florence Hughes of
Wyoming.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant son.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with
the Rev. George Darling officiating.  Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
 Visitation will be Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday 2 to 4 and
7 to 9 p.m. with a vigil service at 8:30 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home,
Belding.  Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Building Fund or the Alvah N.
Belding Library.
