Ionia Shopper's Guide - Sat. March 26, 2022

HUGHES

Joe Louis Hughes age 80 of Ionia, passed away March 19, 2022. He was born July 
18, 1941 the son of Roosevelt and Ethel Mae (Hardiman)Hughes.Joe was born in 
Phillips County, Arkansas and moved to Grand Rapids with his family when he was 
a teenager.Joe sang in a church choir and loved playing guitar. He worked at 
Grand Rapids Smelting Company making molds until it went out of business.Later 
he moved to Ionia where he married Penny L.Deane.He enjoyed fishing and was 
always willing to lend a helping hand and volunteered for eight Cap where he was  
honored for 30 years of service to them.

Surviving is his wife, Penny Hughes of Ionia. Son Steven Howard Deane of Ionia. 
Brother, Kerry (Margaret) Hughes; sisters, Gloria McIntosh, Mozella Hughes and 
Mary Lou (Billy) and several brothers and sisters-n-law and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roosevelt, Arion, Eddie, 
Troy, Willie and Ozell Hughes; sisters, Freddie Mae Hughes, Ane Britt, Rosie 
Moor and Ceolia Hughes-Cox.

Funeral services for Joe will be at the Lake funeral home in Ionia Thursday, 
March 24th at 1:00 p.m. with a visitation 1 hour prior to services at the
