Huizenga, 86, of Grand Rapids passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008. He grew upon on a farm in the Portland and was always helping with the chores. Louis was on the football team at Portland High School. After his graduation in 1940 he worked for Interstate Motor Freight and it was there that he met the love of his life, Carolyn. He then worked for Blackmer Pump. With the arrival of World War II, he enlisted in the US Navy, serving as a recruiter and later on the USS Brister, a naval destroyer. He also attended college in the US Navy. When President Ford became a congressman, Mr. Huizenga signed the nominating petition for Republican. He was a Democrat, but received a thank you from the President for signing. He worked for B & W Distributing Co. and then worked for General Motors in the Material Handling Department and was very involved with the UAW, serving on various committees. Mr. Huizenga liked to socialize and was a member of the VFW Creston Post #3023 and the Glenn Hill American Legion Post #287 in Cedar Springs. In leisure time he liked hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn on Aug. 28, 1977. Mr. Huizenga is survived by his children, Eileen and David Barney of Hart, and Richard and Gaye Huizenga of Belmont; grandchildren, Steven and Suzanne Hasmanis, Sheryl Newsome, Tammy and Rick Braman, Karan and Ted Wiman, Nathan Barney, Gentry and Jessica Barney, Cathy and Mike Ball, Dan and Jan Lyndrup, Leslie and Rom Romani, and Julie and Dr. John Merchun; 26 great-grandchildren with the much anticipated arrival of one more; brothers and sister, Ron Huizenga and Bob Russette, both of Grosse Pointe Shores, Carl (Donna) Huizenga of Grand Rapids, Fred Huizenga of Summerville, S.C., and Carole (Jim) Teman of Greenville; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Snip of Rolling Meadows, Ill.; and nieces and nephews. The services for Mr. Huizenga was Feb. 3 at the Pederson Funeral Home in Rockford with Pastor Jerry Jones officiating. Military honors will be under the auspices of the US Navy. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Activity Fund at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans.
