Merlin L. (Buck) Hummel, 75, of Ionia died March 25, 1997 in Grand Rapids.  He 
was born Feb. 16, 1922 in Hastings, the son of Jerry and Blanche (Webster) 
Hummel.  He retired from Williams Brothers Construction after 30 years of 
service in 1986.  He was a member of The Ionia Loyal Order of the Moose.  He 
married Shirley Temple March 8, 1980 in Ionia.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; five sons, Thomas and Dottie Sines of 
Gaylord, Patrick and Jane Hummel of Ionia, John and Carl Hummel of Ionia, 
Robert and Loretta Temple of Sparta and David Temple of Ionia; six daughters, 
Sandra and Larry Panks of Ionia, Barbara and Jim Bell of Ionia, Mary and Tim 
Lanz of Muir, Brenda Proctor of Ionia, Valerie Dawn and Kenny Willis of 
Missouri, Barbara and Rick Martin of Charlotte; two sisters, Margaret and Bill 
Swiger of Nashville and Maxine and Kenneth Stemler of Sebewa; 24 grandchildren 
and 17 great-grandchildren.  

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Hummel, in 1955 and one 
brother, Lawrence Hummel.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Lake Funeral Home in 
Ionia with Pastor Rick Martin officiating.  Interment will be at Sebewa 
Cemetery.  Visitation will be Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. 
to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
