Lyle was born June 30, 1928, at home in Sunfield the son of Guy and Beatrice (Frey) Hummel. Lyle was raised on their farm until the age 17. He then moved to Portland, Michigan, to work and there he found the love of his life, Jean (Davenport). They were married in 1947 in Portland. They spent two years in Portland before coming to Ionia where they have spent the rest of their lives at. Lyle’s love for his wife, Jean, and his family always came first to him. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and father-in-law. Lyle wasn’t afraid of work. He has farmed, worked at his uncle’s sawmill, delivered blocks of ice to homes in Portland, worked at Fisher Body in Lansing, later worked at Universal Leigh in Saranac where he was a supervisor over inspection until the plant closed in 1985. He then worked at Ionia Public Schools until he retired on Sept. 29, 1993. Lyle’s passions were camping, fishing, and hunting. He was the happiest when he was pheasant and deer hunting with his sons, Dan & Steve, and brother-in-law, Wayne Morgridge. Lyle also enjoyed the times that they both spent with Dick & Pat Hotchkiss, camping and going to the farm shows. Lyle always looked for ways to make people laugh and help anyone in need, there were no strangers to Lyle. His nickname if you knew Lyle was Trouble, as he loved to pick on the clerks in the stores or at Shiloh Church (where they attended), you often would hear “Here comes TROUBLE”! Although Lyle is no longer with us, the legacy of love and laughter he has left will bless many generations to come. Lyle is survived by his loving wife, Jean (Davenport) Hummel; children, Sandra (Chester) Hummel of Texas, Daniel (Jan) Hummel of Traverse City, Patricia (Richard) Hotchkiss of Sheridan, and Steven Hummel of Traverse City; grandchildren, Belinda (Scott) Ferguson of Bailey, Samantha (Mike) Hanel of Tennessee, Kindra (Jim) Collins of Texas, Shawn (Sue) Fletcher of Florida; greatgrandchildren, Nicholas Ferguson, Tyler (Danielle) Ferguson, Alexsis Durham, and Colton Collins; brother, Donald Hummel ; sister-in-laws, Colleen Kessler and Kathleen Hammel; many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded by his parents; brothers, Leonard (Vada) Hummel, Clifford (Jeanette) Hummel, and Harold (Phyllis) Hummel; and sister-in-law, Marion Hummel. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, Aug. 20, 11 a.m. at Shiloh Community Church with Pastors Shane Prewitt & Ken Harger officiating. Interment at Sunset Memorial Garden in Ionia. Visitation on Wednesday at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Contributions may be made in Lyle’s name to the Spectrum Hospice.
