The Hastings Reminder, November 17, 2007


Betty J. Hummel, age 84, of Nashville passed away on Thursday, November 8, 
2007 at Oakland Hospital in Marshall.  Mrs. Hummel was born in Portland on 
August 28, 1923, the daughter of the late Leo D. and Anna G. (Budd) Reed.  She 
was raised in the Portland Area, and attended area schools.

She was the widow of Maurice A. “Stub” Hummel.  The couple was married 
December 2, 1938.  They started their lives together in the Sunfield area but 
relocated to the Nashville/Vermontville areas where they raised their family 
together.  The couple had been married for 56 years when Maurice passed away 
on February 27, 1995.

Betty enjoyed spending time outside working in her flower garden.  Along with 
her husband Maurice, the couple enjoyed playing cards, fishing, going to yard 
sales, and spending their winters together in Nokomis, Florida which they did 
for over 24 years.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Bonnie (John) Crandle; sons, Maurice A. 
Hummel Jr., and David L. (Sandi) Hummel, and her sister; Doris Sines.  She is 
also survived by 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, four great great 
grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Maurice; 
brother, Leo Reed, and her sister, Margaret VanAlstine.

Funeral services were held at the Daniels Funeral Home on Monday, November 12, 
2007 with Pastor Glenn Braham officiating.  Interment followed the funeral 
service at Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville.  Family request donations to 
American Diabetes Association.  Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to 
the Daniels Funeral Home in Nashville.
