She had been in poor health for several years and last September left for California to spend the winter with her son, Leo Humphreys, where she hoped to recover. Mrs. Humphreys gained 10 ˝ pounds during the first few weeks in California, and but for an unexpected complication setting in, she would have continued to gain. Only four weeks ago she was enjoying automobile trips and other recreations, but failed rapidly since that time. Last Tuesday night she was brought to her home in a very critical condition. Her loss will be keenly felt by all. Mrs. Humphreys was the daughter of Bernard and Catherine (Fitzpatrick) McQuillan, was born at Lyons, November 28, 1852. Her husband died a number of years ago, and was one of Ionia’s leading business men for 28 years previous to his death, having conducted a music store during that time. He also served the city as alderman for several terms. Mrs. Humphreys was a member of the SS. Peter and Paul church, where for many years she was a very active and faithful worker. She is survived by ten children: Bernie G. Humphreys, Ionia; Herbert D. Humphreys, Plasterco, Va.; Mrs. Nellie McKee, Ionia; Thomas Humphreys, Lansing; Mayme A. Humphreys, Detroit; Kathryn A. Reichman, Detroit; James A. Humphreys, Detroit; Mrs. Claude Campbell, Grand Rapids; Margaret C. Humphreys, Los Angeles, California; C. Lee Humphreys, Long Beach, California. Also there are four grandsons, Donald Humphreys, Ionia; Herbert D. Humphreys, Jr., Plasterco, Va.; James A. Humphreys, Jr. Detroit; Bobbie Humphreys, Lansing; and two granddaughters, Joan McKee and Mary McKee, both of Ionia; also one brother, Joseph McQuillan, Ionia and one sister, Mrs. Charles Sommers, Ionia. The funeral was held from the SS. Peter and Paul church Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock. Burial took place at Mt. Olivet cemetery.
