Ionia Sentinel-Standard - Thurs. Jan. 31, 1974

Saranac- A Saranac resident, William George Hurd, 75, of 56 Center, Saranac, 
died Thursday at Butterworth hospital in Grand Rapids.

Born at Royal Oak, November 15, 1898, he was the son of William and Sara 
Johnston Hird.

June 27, 1936, he married at Muskegon to Charlotte B. Martin.

He was a telegraph operator and assistant to the station master of the Grand 
Trunk railroad at Durand until 1949 when he came to Saranac.

From 1949 to 1957 he was station master for the G.T. railroad in Saranac. In 
1957 he accepted the position of station master and clerk in Carson City for 
the G.T. railroad where he worked until his retirement in 1963.

He was a member of the Boston lodge F&AM, Royal Arch Masons of Lowell, and the 
Blue lodge of the Masonic order. He was at one time worshipful master of the 
Masonic lodge and also king and high priest of the Hooker chapter of Royal Arch 
Masons of Lowell. He held position of king with the Hooker chapter at the time 
of his death. He was a member of the Senior Citizens of Saranac and an active 
member of the Saranac Community church.

Survivors are his wife, Charlotte; three sisters, Mrs. Florence Lanning of 
Waterford, Harriet Hird of Midland and Mrs. Brethren of LaJolla, Calif. 

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 pm at Morris-Roetman funeral home at 
Saranac. Rev. Mendenhall will officiate and interment will be at Saranac 
cemetery.

Friday at 8 pm the Masonic grand lodge will conduct Masonic services at the 
funeral home.

A memorial has been established for Saranac Community church.

Family will be at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 pm and Friday from 2 to 
4 pm and 7 to 9 pm.
