George Buckner; Rev. Fry gave the prayer at the house; Dr. Willard K. Spencer, the prayer and the Scripture reading at the church; Rev. H. Hayward was in charge of the committal services at the Highland Park cemetery, where the burial took place. Rev. J. Frank Green read the following obituary: “Elizabeth Purling was born in the city of Norwich, Eng., on July 7, 1881. She was the youngest of eight children. Her parents, John and Eliza Purling, were sincere Christian people and were members of the Baptist church. her father preached for a Baptist church as lay minister for 14 years, walking four miles each way in addition to his work as an employee of the Colman company. “On December 24, 1908, she was united in marriage to Herbert G. Hurrell in Norwich, Eng. On the twelfth day of February following they left England for Canada, where Mr. Hurrell took a pastorate in the town of Hagersville, Ont. Fourteen months later Mr. Hurrell received a call to Wilson, N.Y., and from that time they have lived in the United States. “The first child was born October 21, 1919, in Wentworth, S.D. There followed for Mrs. Hurrell a serious illness of mind and body that continued for about 15 months and necessitated sanitarium and hospital treatment. The child, a boy, died after 11 weeks of frail existence. “For several months Mrs. Hurrell’s health has been declining. She became suddenly much worse the second day following Christmas and it soon became apparent that her case called for institutional treatment. January 3 she was admitted to the hospital, where she passed to her Eternal home on January 18, 1929. “Those that survive her, and mourn her going away, are her husband, Rev. Herbert George Hurrell; two sons, Paul Manson, age 6, and Herbert George, Jr., age 5. Also the following brothers and sisters, all of whom live in England: William, Norwich; Jack, Hull; James, Norwich; Emma, Hastings, and Leila, Norwich. “Mrs. Hurrell identified herself with the church in 1909 while still in Hagersville, Ont. Her husband had the joy of baptizing her. She had always been in the fullest sympathy with the work of the church and had shared in it as far as was possible for her to do so. She enjoyed a simple, trusting faith in her God as the Great Disposer of all things. As a wife and mother her devotion knew no bounds, she gave all she had to give without stint. Over all of her life there may truly be written ‘She hath done what she could’.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/h/hurrell32518nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 3.8 Kb
