Miss Ella J. Hutchins, 78, who had resided for the last eight years in Ann Arbor with her sister Miss Jessie Hutchins, passed away at her home there shortly after 9 o’clock Tuesday morning following a serious illness for many weeks. Death came Tuesday morning after members of the family had given up hope for her recovery several days ago. Short funeral services will be held at the Dolph funeral home in Ann Arbor Friday morning at 10 o’clock. The body will be brought to Ionia from Ann Arbor after the service and will lie in state for one hour between 3 and 4 o’clock Friday at the Stone funeral home on Washington street. A grave service will be held at the Highland Park cemetery at 4 o’clock Friday in Ionia. Miss Hutchins was the last surviving member of a class of three which was graduated from the Ionia high school in 1874. It was the third class to be graduated from the Ionia high school. Other members of the class who have since died were Frank Harter and Mrs. A. W. Merriam. Miss Hutchins’ early school days were spent in the state of New York. While a teacher in Ionia she taught one term in Dildine district and one year in the second ward school. She then entered the University of Michigan after examination and after two years of study taught one year in Muskegon. Upon returning from Muskegon Miss Hutchins began teaching in the Ionia public schools and taught here for 46 years. During her many years in the Ionia schools Miss Hutchins taught practically every grade and every study. She majored in mathematics, history and literature. She later became supervisor of her departments. Miss Hutchins’ course of study took her to Glens Falls, N.Y., Martha’s Vineyard, and Chautauqua, N.Y. Her preparation was completed by extensive travel both in the United States and Europe. Miss Hutchins is survived by two brothers, Lee and John of Grand Rapids, and one sister, Jessie, of Ann Arbor. Rev. F. J. Fitch, of the First Baptist church, of Ionia, will deliver the grave service at Highland Park cemetery.
