S. Huthcinson died this afternoon at the Soldier’s home in Grand Rapids after an illness lasting several weeks. Over a week ago he suffered a second stroke of apoplexy from which he never recovered remaining in a semi- conscious state until his death this afternoon at three o’clock. Gen. F. S. Hutchinson was born in Bedford, Ohio Sept. 9, 1839 and received his early education in the Ohio schools and colleges. When a young man he moved to Lyons, Michigan where he took up the study of law. Here he was located at the breaking out of the civil war and he was one of the fist men to volunteer in that struggle, enlisting in Co. F. Fifteenth Michigan infantry. During all of the war he remained in the service actively defending his country. He was a gallant soldier, always in the thick of the battle and often singled out by his superior officers for rewards for bravery. The company in which he enlisted was raised partly in Lyons and he became a member on Jan. 12, 1861. The first captain, Melvin Dresser, was killed at Shiloh. After seven months’ service Gen. Hutchinson began his rise and passed rapidly through all of the ranks from private to lieutenant. He was then transferred to the army of the Tennessee and became an aide on the staff of Gen. Oliver. At the battle of Iuka he was twice wounded and had two horses shot under him. He was then ordered to Vicksburg where he rejoined this regiment after the special service on which he had been detailed because of meritorious conduct. Following the capitulation of Vicksburg he was made captain of the company and Aug 1, 1863 was commissioned major of the Fifteenth Michigan infantry, then a part of the army of the Tennessee. As a member of the army of the Tennessee he took part in the battles at Memphis and at Chattanooga. At Missionary Ridge he was again wounded and had another horse shot under him. Following this battle he came to Lyons on a furlough and later rejoined his regiment in time to go with Sherman on the famous march to the sea. He took part in every battle of the campaign. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel on June 24, 1864 and at the close of Sherman’s campaign went to Savannah where he took part in the capture of Ft. McAllister, one of the most brilliant minor engagements of the war. January 1, 1865 he was made colonel of the Fifteenth Michigan infantry and led the regiment through the Carolinas to Raleigh. At Goldsborough he took command of the regiment. Following the grand review of the troops at Washington he went to Little Rock, Ark., and other western points as brigadier general to inspect forts. During the war he was wounded five times and had five horses shot under him. He was mustered out at Detroit in 1865. He then came to Ionia and took up the practice of law in the offices of Blanchard & Bell. He was admitted to the bar in 1868. Since that time he has held the offices of deputy register of deed, alderman and justice of the peace and served on the city election boards for many years. In 1861 he was made captain of Co. G, Second regiment and was the second captain following Capt. J. H. Kidd. He was made inspector general of the state troops on the staff of Governor Begoie in 1883 and served to 1885. He was a member of the Vicksburg commission which erected a ….(illegible). He married Miss Addie Root of Lyons and is survived by her and by two sons, Herbert of Ionia and Albert of Chicago. Herbert and Albert Hutchinson went to Grand Rapids at noon to attend the funeral for their father General F. S. Hutchinson. J. C. Taylor, Ed Shattuck, J. L. Fowls, T. G. Stevenson, Jas. Laden, Jas Greenman, A. E. Tower, Robert Carpenter, C. Eyster, W. A. Wood, George Rector and Fred Kidd went to Grand Rapids at noon to attend the funeral for Gen. F. S. Hutchinson. Subsequent Publication Saturday, October 13, 1913 The funeral for the late General F. S. Hutchinson took place this afternoon at the Soldiers’ home in Grand Rapids at two o’clock. It was a full military funeral, the bearers being all members of the home, and all the soldiers a the home turned out in a body, being headed by the military band. Quite a number of the veterans from the Iona G. A. R. attended.
