Hutchins, notice of whose death at Beloit, Wis., was made in these columns on Saturday, was the first superintendent of the Ionia High school, assuming that position away back in 1866, when the old frame building on North First street which afterward served so long as City hall was vacated as the city’s public school, and the High school established on Union hill. There are many still living within the environs of Ionia who will recall their association with this good man with pleasant memories. Prof. Hutchins might be best described as a full grown man. Strong in his convictions, pure in his life, lovable of disposition, earnest of purpose, profound in his learning, sincere and loyal in his Christian manhood, he was a man who appealed to other men, one who commanded respond and admiration. His friendship was a thing to be highly prized, and even to the last he remained a companion who was an inspiration. He was a faithful member of the Baptist church, and had been prominent in the denomination many years. Hew was the younger brother of John B. and Phineas Hutchins, also former residents of Ionia. Deceased was aged 83 years. His wife died in September 1900.
