The Lake Odessa Wave-Times, 1916
Godfrey Hess Hutchins, the oldest son of Lawson and Tresea Hutchins, was born 
February 9, 1840, in Seneca county, New York, and died at his home in Lake 
Odessa, Mich., August 12, 1916, aged 76 years, 6 months, three days.  His 
father died when he was seven years old, after which he went to live with his 
uncle William Harsick in Lenawee county, Mich., where he grew to manhood and 
where he was married December 17, 1865 to Hannah P. Pearson.  They then 
removed to Odessa township, Ionia county, where he had bought a farm in the 
then almost unbroken wilderness, where they toiled together and cleared up 
their farm of 120 acres on which they lived until 14 years ago.  They sold the 
farm and moved to their home in the village where they continued to live until 
the death of his wife December 22, 1910.

December 18, 1911 he was married to Mrs. Esther Baldwin, who still survives 
him, together with one half-brother, Thos. Swarthout, and numerous other 
relatives.  He had one son who died in early infancy.

Shortly after coming to Odessa he was converted and joined the M. E. church of 
Woodland, there being none nearer, and he and his wife were members there 
until the church was organized at Bonanza, when they became charter members 
and to which they remained loyal and faithful members ever ready to do all in 
their power for the advancement of the Redeemer’s Kingdom and the church they 
loved, giving liberally both of time and money and always found in attendance 
when health permitted, until the Master said: “It is enough; come up higher.”
