Andrew M. Hutchison died at his home in this village Saturday morning after a protracted illness. He was almost 79 years old. Mr. Hutchison was born in New York state and grew to young manhood there. In the early fifties he came to Portland and ran the old saw mill that stood on the flats that are now a part of Goodwin park. The traces of the old race are still to be seen there, though the mill has long ago gone into ruins. Mr. Hutchison was here only a few years, returning to Waterport, N. Y., where he ran a sawmill for 45 years. It was when he decided to retire from the active life he had led that his mind wandered back to Portland and he determined to come here to spend his last days. He has been a resident here for ten years. He was married in 1862 to Restora Jane Smith, a sister of the late William Smith. He had met her while in Portland and came back a few years later to claim his bride. Two children were born to them, both of whom have been well known here for many years. They are William J. of Portland and George S. of Grand Rapids. Mr. Hutchison had a history of his family which dated back to 1670 and was most interesting in showing the development of the family name. The earliest ancestor of whom there is any record kept in Scotland a breeding place for rabbits and the son born to him was named Hutch, a name which meant a place where rabbits are kept. In time a son came to Hutch, who married an Englishwoman, and the youngster was called Hutchin, “in” being the diminutive. Still a third generation came and the “son” was added. During the centuries that have passed this particular branch of the family dropped the one letter from the name. The funeral was held Monday afternoon.
