We are called upon this week to chronicle the death of another young lady taken from the ranks of our young people and one whom all that knew her respected and loved with tender and ardent devotion. Many hearts were made sad indeed when the report went out Saturday noon that Jennie Hutchison was dead for only the evening before but one she was out to prayer meeting and choir rehearsal at the Congregational church in her usual genial happy and light hearted mode. Friday morning she went to her work in the box factory but not feeling well remained only about an hour and returned home with a slight sore throat and Dr. Ferguson was called to attend her, who pronounced it tonsillitis. Saturday forenoon at about 11 o’clock she began to feel suddenly worse complaining of terrible pain in her head and soon became unconscious and passed away just as the factory whistles were blowing the noon hour. Her death removes a very estimable and popular young lady and especially will she be greatly missed by the Congregational church society, being a member of the church, Sunday school and Christian Endeavor. One of her leading characteristics was loyalty and faithfulness to every duty. Jennie graduated with the class of ‘97, was planning to go to college and was looking forward to that event with a great deal of pleasure; but how quickly are our hopes and aspirations and desires wrecked by the great conqueror, death. She was ready, however, to answer the call. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the church at which there was a large attendance. The Eastern Star chapter and Degree of Honor attended anybody out of respect to the family. The casket and rostrum bore a profusion of beautiful flowers: An anchor from the Belding Silk Co.; cluster of pink and cream roses from the choir, placed inside the casket; wreath from the Alumni; basket from the box factory; “C.E.” from Christian Endeavor; spray, class of ‘97; pillow, B.I.G.; spray, from her Sunday school class and one from the Oak [unreadable words]. The bearers were six young men and honorary bearers six young ladies. She had selected the hymns which were sung by Miss Spencer, Mrs. Ferguson, Joe Berry and W.B. Reed "Asleep in Jesus;” “Lead Kindly Light;” “Thy Will be Done;” “It Is Well With My Soul.” Reverend B.V. Child preached a fine sermon from 1st Tim. 6-16, and closed with the following: “Jennie Isabelle Hutchison, born at Canton, Mass., January 21, 1880. Moved to Belding September 5, 1899. Died December 3, 1898, aged 18 years, 10 months and 12 days. “Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life.” Her remains now rest in River Ridge cemetery.
