Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Wednesday afternoon, in charge of Rev. J. H. Stewart, with members of the local American Legion and Auxiliary attending a body. Burial was made in Portland cemetery. Mrs. Hyland’s maiden name was Lavina Crowell. She was born in Tiflin, Ohio, April 16, 1862, and with her parents came to Michigan when five years of age, the family settling in Orange township. On July 4, 1881, she was united in marriage to Mr. Hyland, the couple celebrating their Golden wedding July 4, 1931. From this union nine children were born, two passing away in infancy. A son, Lee, died four years ago last February. Another son, Dale, was killed in the World War and his memory later honored when the local ex-service men gave their organization the name of Dale E. Hyland post, American Legion. Besides the husband three sons and two daughters survive. They are Fay, professor in the forestry department at the University of Maine; Ward and Estin, of Portland, and Mrs. Walter Emerick and Mrs. Clarence DeLaVergne, also of this village. Twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive.
