Pewamo Woman, Sick and Despondent, Seeks Relief in Death. Mrs. Welcome Irish of Pewamo committed suicide yesterday morning by drowning herself in the cistern at her home. Mrs. Irish was 70 years of age and had been suffering from nervous prostration this spring, which made her melancholy and despondent. While her husband was doing chores she jumped into the cistern. He had left her in bed when he …[unreadable words]… and not finding her in the house, began a search. L.F. Lobdell and B.A. Ludwick, who lived next door, came to Mr. Irish’s assistance and when her body rose the third time in the deep water of the cistern they succeeded in removing her. Dr. Strachan was quickly summoned but all efforts to resuscitate her were fruitless. She is survived by three sons, Will of Pewamo, Glenn and Claud of Pontiac. ------------- Miss Jane Cowe was born at Berwick on the Tweed, Scotland, August 10, 1843; came to Ohio with her parents at the age of 7 years; moved to Michigan in 1864 and was united in marriage to Welcome M. Irish in 1867 residing near Carson City. To this union were born six children, five are now living, Will, Fred, Mabel, Claude and Glen. With the husband and brother and sister of deceased living at Carson City mourn the loss of a dearly beloved wife and sister. Mrs. Irish was a resident of Pewamo for the last 25 years, has been in ill health for upwards of 30 years. Died May 9, 1907, at the age of 63 years, eight months and 29 days. A very large number of neighbors, friends and sympathizers with the family in their bereavement gathered at the funeral services held in the Baptist Church, Pewamo, at 1 p.m. Sunday, sermon by the pastor. Interment in West Pewamo cemetery.
