Mr. Isham was born Sept. 10, 1840 in Ionia county. He lived on the home farm until the death of his mother, which occurred when he was eleven years old and he then went to New York and spent some four years with relatives. He obtained a good business education and after his return to this state he took a course in “Woodland College,” as he always spoke of it, helping his father in clearing land and raising crops. October 16, 1862, Mr. Isham was married to Miss Mary L. Carey. In the winter of 1864 Mr. Isham entered the army as a member of Company E. Twenty-seventh Michigan Infantry. He was present at the siege of Knoxville, took part in the battles of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor and Spottsylvania Court house and aided in the siege of Petersburgh where he witnessed the blowing up of the fort. He was present at the surrender of General Lee and took part in the grand review at Washington. He was a member of Julius T. Barrett Post, G.A.R., of Carson City and always took an active interest in all the reunions of the old veterans. He was a member of the drum corps and made the post famous at all reunions for the fact that it was the only post in the state that could boast of a drum corps composed entirely of members that served in the civil war in the same company. He was also a member of the national association of civil war musicians. He has been afflicted for several years with erysipelas which he contracted during the civil war. Mr. Isham was a member of Carson City lodge, No. 306, F. and A.M., for over thirty-eight years. He leaves two sons, Will Isham, of Peoria, Ill, and Frank Isham, of Butternut and four brothers, J.F. Isham, of Cleveland, F.H. Isham, of Carson City, O.M. Isham of Belding, and F.N. Isham, of Oden, to mourn his death. Mr. Isham will be missed by a host of friends. He always had a good word or joke for every one, for no matter how much he was suffering personally, he was always trying to bring good cheer to others. The funeral was held at the Congregational church at Butternut, yesterday at 10:00 a.m. Interment took place at the Bloomer Center cemetery. Rev. D.J. Owens, assisted by Rev. N.L. Otis, officiating.
