Such in brief in the outline of the life of Mrs. Caroline Isham, widow of Giles Isham, who died in 1864. In 1834 Mr. and Mrs. Isham left their native state and lived one year in Chicago. They then came to Michigan and settled on land upon which the family residence now stands, on the west side of the river, in this village. About the only house in the vicinity at the time was a log cabin on what is now known as the Fox farm. With the occupants of this cabin Mr. and Mrs. Isham, with their two or three children, remained until they built a log shanty on their own premises, on the same lot now occupied by the present residence, which was substituted for the log hut in 1855. The story of their pioneer life is much the same as that of early settlers; full of interest and often thrilling incidents. To them were born six children, four of whom survive their mother: Southwick Isham, the eldest son, now a resident of Oregon; Mrs. Henry Hitchcock; Mrs. Marion Littlefield, and Frederick, the youngest of the six children, living in this village. A sister of Mrs. Isham, Mrs. J.C. Blanchard of Ionia, is now the only remaining member of her father’s family. The funeral was conducted from the residence, Rev. Wm. Judd conducting the services, assisted by a choir of selected singers. Hon. A. K. Roof, John R. Dougherty, Theodore King and Allen Link bore the remains to their last resting place; and although a stormy day, a large concourse of friends and neighbors convened with many friends from both in and outside our village, in mourning the loss of a loving mother, a faithful friend, and a good neighbor. Death of Mrs. Isham. Mrs. Caroline Isham, widow of Giles S. Isham, died at her home in Lyons, on Monday evening, in the 86th year of her age. Mr. and Mrs. Isham removed from Burlington, Vt., to Lyons in 1837, where Mr. Isham was engaged in the mercantile business, being the first, and for many years the only merchant of the village. Except for a brief absence in California, during the gold fever, Mr. Isham lived in Lyons until his death, and Mrs. Isham has continued to reside in the same home ever since. Mrs. Isham was a very benevolent, kind hearted woman, who will be remembered by the old residents of the Grand River valley as a good neighbor and warm friend. The pioneers of Ionia county remember her kind, genial welcome as hostess during the hotel life of her husband at Lyons. Mrs. Isham leaves three children – Mrs. Henry Hitchcock, Mrs. Marian Littlefield, and Fred H. Isham. Her sister, Mrs. J.C. Blanchard, is the last living of seven sisters and two brothers. The funeral will take place from the home in Lyons, tomorrow at 1 o’clock.
