Jackson, age 74, died in h is sleep on Sunday, October 12, 2008, at his home in Clarkston. Born October 15, 1933, near Lake Odessa, to LeRoy and Ethel Morrow Jackson, tom was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, a brother and a nephew. tom will be remembered for many things - a joyful independent, and an uncommon enthusiasm for learning and hard work, and a gift for organization among them. Many will remember him as a constant fixture in the front row o Debby Dahlberg's aerobics classes throughout the years. He possessed a fine singing voice and enjoyed performing solo and in groups. Tom also had a prodigious memory for facts and anecdote, and loved to share stories and personal lore with others. He had a particular curiosity for history and religion. Committed to living each day to the fullest, Tom pursued several occupations during his lifetime. At the age of 8, he performed "Stoop Labor" in the fields surrounding his rural homestead and went on to assume a variety of jobs over the years, including hydroelectric worker, hod carrier, clerical worker, food- processing shift foreman, supermarket manager, survey interviewer, pesticide inspector, automobile-assembly man, high school teacher and custodian. In 1984, Tom retired early from his position as manager of the Lewiston Job Service agency to focus on subsistence farming on Lindsay Creek, temporary employment opportunities, and his family and friends. One of the jobs he enjoyed greatly was doing maintenance at our lady of Lourdes Church with Jerry Schrempp, keeping a house for God. Tom was also a proud U.S. Army veteran, having operated a commissary in the Korean War. Before settling in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley, he lived in Sam Manuel, Ariz., and Moscow. In 1991, Tom joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He regarded this conversation experience as the most profound of his life, and it remained a wellspring of hope and inspiration for him until his last day here. Tom was fond of remarking to all that he was truly blessed in both faith and family, and this belief motivated him to look forward to each day with hope and a sense of adventure. At the time of his peaceful passing, he was making plans for holiday entertaining in a new home, planting a vegetable garden in the spring, and continuing his studies with fellow LDS members. Tom is survived by daughter Jackson Vance-Matthews of Clarkston; daughter Carol Fillinger of Hammond, Ind.; six grandchildren, Emaline, Garrett, Constance, Madelaine, Janice and Jessica; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Tom was adamant that his passion for education continue beyond his death and decided to donate himself for the advancement of medical science. A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at the Clarkston Ward's LDS Chapel, 1123 16th Ave. Tom requested that any memorial to him be made to the individual's favorite organization.
