George Jackson was born in the township of Augusta Canada, October 18th 1803 and died at the home of his son Samuel in the township of Campbell, Ionia County, Mich., May 2nd, 1908, aged 104 year, 6 mo, ad 14 days. Oct. 18th 1827 he was married to Jane Whitney; to them were born 12 children all of whom lived to manhood and womanhood, eight sons and four daughters. After fifty years of marriage life the wife died July 2nd 1877. In March 1878 he was married to Mrs.Rhoda Buxton who died in Feb. 1891. He came to Michigan in 1871 since which time he has lived in Ionia Co. The last years of his life he spent with his sons Joe and Samuel in Campbell. Other children living here are Ed Jackson living west of town and Erastus north east of town and Mrs.Dave Wilson north of town. He served six months with the Canadian Volunteers in what is known as the "Fenian Raid." At the age of twenty-eight he was converted and united with the M.E. Church in Canada. After coming to Michigan he united with the U.B. Church and was to the end of his life a faithful Christian member. The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church in West Berlin Tuesday forenoon. There were ver two hundred relatives present and crowds of friends. The sermon was preached by Elder Mourer of Lake Odessa and the long procession passed to Lake Side Cemetery where the remains were laid to rest. This old man surely has a remarkable record, having lived to see the results of the Wars of 1812, 1845, 1861, and 1898, and the growth of an infant republic to one of the foremost nations of the world. A patriarch of the 20th century. "Old Uncle Joe" and "Grandpa Jackson" as he has been familiarly called for twenty five yers back by everyone around here from the youngest person because of his phenomenal age and because of his personal knowledge and memory of days and years long long gone bye. To live to be over 104 years old is something remarkable indeed.
