Although not unexpected, the news of her death will be sorrowfully received by many of our people, for she was well known and generally respected. Her death took place Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1892, after an illness of only a few days. Mrs. Jacoby had been in poor health for many years, and only a few days since was taken with the grip, which rapidly developed into pneumonia and, in spite of all that medical aid and human assistance could do to arrest the disease, she was compelled to pass to the great beyond. The deceased was born near the city of Treves, Germany, on the 18th day of September, 1839. She came to Ionia county in 1855 and was married to Michael Jacoby, Sr., by the Rev. Father Goetz, of Westphalia, who then held services three or four times a year at the above house which is yet a visible landmark of the pioneer’s work—this was before a Catholic church was built in Miriam—a pioneer of Michigan, indeed. Nearly forty years ago she and her worthy husband located in this township to carve out from the wilderness, a home for themselves. They have lived here on the same homestead since 1857. How few comprehend the progress and changes that have taken place it hat length of time, the labor, study and thought, the privation and suffering, the joys and sorrows to have accomplished the multitude of great and glorious works that have been achieved in that length of time, but to none who have accomplished the greatest feats in invention, to some who have mastered the science or become the most proficient in any way of the arts of modern times, can there come a greater satisfaction than it was to her to be a kind and dutiful wife, a fond and loving mother, and appreciated and beloved neighbor. Mrs. Jacoby was buried from the Catholic church on Thursday, Feb. 4, at 9 a.m. The solemn services were held by Father Fierle, of Ionia. The deceased leaves a husband, one son, three brothers and two sisters. Her family circle was first broken by the death of a daughter, who died about thirty years ago; following by death next was her son Charles who was killed in the lumber woods at Deer Lake, Mich., Nov. 28, 1882. What visions were disclosed to her during those years of darkness we cannot know, nor what views of the spiritual world were hers to experience we are unable to discover; but we do know that the Savior whom she loved and served in the strength of her youth and maturity of life, is able to keep that which she had committed to his care until the morning of the resurrection, and until that auspicious day, dear mother, wife and sister, farewell.
