Jerry was born Jan. 11, 1956, in Grand Rapids, the son of Joseph and Margaret Farrell Jakeway. He graduated from Belding High School with the class of 1974 and earned three degrees from Michigan State University and an engineering degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In earlier years he worked for Raytheon. He currently was an engineer for Smith Aerospace in Grand Rapids, where he had worked for a number of years. In the past he had worked on the Patriot Missile Defense System used in the Gulf War and was currently working on several projects relating to missile defense systems. He had a brilliant mind. He was also a big fan of Belding High School football. Jerry will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Jerry was preceded in death by his sister, Mary, in 1979; mother, Margaret, in 2000; and daughter, Meggin, in 2001. Jerry is survived by his children, Patrick and Sonya Jakeway, Katherine Jakeway, Daniel Jakeway, Leah Jakeway, Michael Jakeway, Timothy Jakeway, Maryrose Jakeway, Kiera Jakeway, Emma Jakeway, all of Belding; four grandchildren, Gabrielle Jakeway, Kaylee Jakeway, Damion Powers, David Clevenger; his children’s mother, Jodi Jakeway of Belding; father, Joseph and Helen Jakeway of Comstock Park; and brothers and sisters and their spouses, Lee and Marilyn Jakeway of Hawaii, Kathleen Dunn, Patricia and John Baum, all of Ada, John and Ellen Jakeway of Grattan, Paul and Julie Jakeway of Greenville, Therese and Don Shores of Ada. Mass of Christian burial will be offered 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Parnell, with Father Rock Badgerow presiding. Private interment will follow in Smyrna Cemetery. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday with a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, 203 Pleasant St., Belding. Memorial contributions may be given to the Belding Athletic Boosters or the Gift of Life Program.
