All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sandy Heintzelman sheintz@iserv.net May 21, 2011, 9:09 pm Ionia Daily Sentinel-Standard, 14 Mar 1932 Ira Jeffers, 88, of Palo, a retired merchant and printer, and the last Civil war veteran living in that vicinity died at his home Sunday afternoon following complications due to the infirmities of old age and aggravated by an attack of influenza. His aged widow is ill with the same malady. Funeral services will be conducted at the house Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Burial will be in the Palo cemetery. Mr. Jeffers was born in Port Rowan, N.Y. He enlisted in company F., 137th infantry, of the New York volunteers August 20, 1862, served through the war and received his discharge June 9, 1865. After the war he went to Nebraska, marrying while there, and remained for nine years. He then came to Michigan and chose Palo as a place to continue with his trade, that of a printer, where he for years edited the Palo Post. He also engaged in the hardware business, retiring from all business activities 14 years ago. Fifty years he has claimed continuously Palo his home, although he resided three years in Florida. He was a member of the Palo Masonic lodge and of the Palo Methodist Episcopal church. Besides his sick widow, he leaves two children, Mrs. Ada Minier and Alber Jeffers, both of Palo, and two grandchildren. He was a member of the O.E.S. It is the request of the family that flowers be omitted.
