Danby township experienced one of its saddest tragedies in years, Thursday, 
when Lloyd Jeffers, adopted son of Mr. and Mrs. James Jeffers, was drawn into 
the mechanism of a moving gasoline engine and fatally injured.  The accident 
occurred at the Jeffers farm, where the unfortunate young man was being 
assisted by Messrs. Ed. Farnsworth and Lorenzo Lindley, neighbors, in cutting 
a quantity of corn stalks.  Jeffers died from his injuries late Thursday 
afternoon without regaining consciousness.  His head was badly wounded, his 
left wrist broken, and his left arm fractured in several different places.

Just how the accident happened will probably never be known, it was all done 
so quickly, but the most reasonable solution of it is that a blanket which 
Jeffers was endeavoring to hang up between the engine and cooler while the 
engine was in motion caught on the governors in some way and wrapping itself 
about the man’s left wrist drew him into the mechanism before he had an 
opportunity to save himself.  He was carried into the house by his companions 
and Dr. J. D. Bradfield was summoned.  The physician’s efforts to avert death, 
however, proved futile.

Mr. Jeffers was born in 1883 and was adopted by his foster parents when he was 
about a year and a half old.  He leaves three uncles, Anson Torpy, of Sebewa, 
Willis Torpy, of Saranac, William Torpy, of Brighton, and an aunt, Miss Emma 
Torpy, of Sunfield.

The funeral was held at the late home Sunday afternoon at 2:00, conducted by 
Rev. John H. Stewart, of the Portland Baptist church.  Interment was made in 
the Danby township cemetery.
