Stillman H. Jenks died at the home of S.M. Townsend, on Sunday morning, at the age of 78 years. He was born in Birmingham, Mich., and was one of the early business men in Ionia. He was associated for a time in a door, sash and blind factory, was in the Clark foundry, corner Lafayette and Union streets, and built part of the Arnold machine shop, south of river. He was a machinist by trade, and also worked for a time in the railroad shops. He was married in 1854 to Delia Eliza Butler, a cousin of S.M. Townsend and also of the late Mrs. W.S. Bates. He leaves two children: Miss Carrie, a school teacher, who came up from Mexico last fall to be with her father, and Arthur, a mining engineer who has been in Mexico several years, and recently went to California. Mr. Jenks and his daughter have been living in Grand Rapids the past winter, but came to the Townsend home about six weeks ago, when it was evident he could not long survive. Mr. Jenks has not been able to do hard, continuous work, for some years, and he has paid attention to building and operating small steamboats. One of these boats was on the “inland route” between Oden and Cheboygan and one has been on Grand river below Grand Rapids. During this time he has lived part of the time in Grand Rapids and some of the time in Ionia township. He was a good workman, and a good citizen in all respects. He is the last of four brothers, who followed similar lines, one in Port Huron, and one in the copper country. Funeral at the Townsend home tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock. Interment, Balcom cemetery. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/j/jenks15612nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 2.2 Kb
