He retired at seven o’clock, apparently in his usual happy frame of mind, and a few minutes thereafter suffered a stroke of apoplexy, which carried him off. The shock was severe, and came absolutely without warning, as he did not speak a word after retiring, though members of his family were near by. He had spent an unusually pleasant afternoon, himself and wife being callers at the home of neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Wright, until five o’clock, and shortly after six he proposed to Mrs. Jennings to go to church. Mr. Jennings was 56 years old in September, about 45 of which were spent in Ionia county. He was prominent in G.A.R. circles, and was a familiar figure on our streets – jovial and friendly seemingly at all times. His wife and three grown sons survive him. The funeral was from the residence, under the auspices of Wm. H. Borden post, G.A.R., at two o’clock on Tuesday. Rev. D.F. Barnes, D.D., conducted the religious services. ---- The funeral services over the late J.C. Jennings occurred at the residence Tuesday afternoon, and the commodious rooms were filled with neighbors and mourning friends. Some seventy members of Wm. H. Borden post, of which organization deceased was a past commander, were present, and a large representation from the Woman’s Relief Corps. Interment was in Highland Park.
